#tbtIt’s that time of year again, so I thought I should look back at my #TIFF Reels. This one is from 2022.The #TorontoInternationalFilmFestival is an annual showcase of films hosted in #Toronto for over 40 years. In 2004, I worked at #TIFF.I’ve also volunteered as a guest judge for their children’s film festival #Sprockets which then became #TIFFKids.I volunteered at the #GetReel Black Film Festival and other film screenings and festivals. From 2000-2004, I started a film festival called #ICEDINBLACK Canadian Black Experiences on Film. Last year, I decided to take first steps at fulfilling a lifelong dream— learning to make films.I came back to it again after realizing that I really do enjoy editing reels and telling stories visually and that I miss the filmmaking world. In high school, I wanted to be a filmmaker. This was the 1990s when we used #VHS and I edited with two #VCRs.There was an editing suite at the head office of my school board, but that would require me to take two buses and a subway, by myself, during the school day, and I was able to do that once. This was in the very early days of the internet. There was no social media.I had never met any filmmakers. And this dream all seemed SSOOOOOOOO far away. Now, I’m taking my second @gbcollege filmmaking class.I’ve taken a @uguelphcwmfa grad school course and two @_liftfilm workshops in #screenwriting.I’m finishing in the #CTBISAP @caribbeantales Summer Incubator program.I’ve joined @wift.toronto and another media association. I was also a screenwriter for the #HeritageMinute extension video on #OscarPeterson in 2022.You can find it on YouTube.I don’t qualify for the many 18-35 year old programs that NOW exist for emerging and aspiring filmmakers, and some of the programs for #BlackFilmmakers take place during my workday. But, I am doing what I can with the what I DO have. You can vote for my project at the link in my bio or https://lnkd.in/gc44SrGqSo, this year’s #TIFF2024 hits a little different.Stay tuned for more #TIFF Reels.@tiff_net @cameronpbailey @historicacanada

🎬 5 Key Takeaways from Paul Mulraney's Talk on Vernacular Filmmaking 🎬At the recent MA Film & Television Online (https://lnkd.in/dui8YqiR) Graduate Showcase at Falmouth University, Paul Mulraney shared his insights on vernacular filmmaking that resonated deeply with our community. Here are five powerful takeaways that every independent filmmaker should consider:1. Embrace the Power of Local Stories: Paul emphasized the significance of hyperlocal storytelling. By focusing on the communities around us, we can uncover rich, untold stories that resonate on a universal level.2. Redefine Production Value: It's not about the fanciest camera or the biggest budget. True production value comes from a perfect fit between the medium and the message. Sometimes, the simplest tools can tell the most compelling stories.3. Prioritize Relationships Over Transactions: When money is removed from the equation, relationships and the process of filmmaking become the most valuable assets. This approach fosters genuine connections and a more authentic storytelling process.4. Vernacular Filmmaking as a Philosophy: This method is more than just a technique—it's a way of life. It involves deep engagement with people, places, and stories, prioritizing honesty and humanity over commercial interests.5. Collaborate and Exchange Creatively: Instead of relying on traditional financial exchanges, Paul advocates for a barter system among creatives. This fosters a supportive community where services are exchanged, enhancing the creative process.🔍 Discussion Points:* How can independent filmmakers balance financial sustainability with the philosophy of vernacular filmmaking?* In what ways can local stories be made to resonate with global audiences?* What are some of the challenges and benefits you've encountered when prioritizing relationships over budgets in your projects?Continue the conversation and explore how we can all contribute to a more authentic and community-driven film industry.#IndependentFilm #VernacularFilmmaking #LocalStories #FilmCommunity #CreativeCollaboration #MAFilmAndTelevision #FalmouthUniversity #FilmmakingPhilosophy #PaulMulraney #FilmInspiration

That moment when your photo makes it into an IDA article 😭 😭 😭 no but on a serious note please give this piece a read. Through my time working on unseen I learned so much more about what it means to make accessible stories and how richer stories can become when taking accessibility into consideration throughout your production process and in our case a priority.

As a filmmaker trying to get recognized on social media, I made the mistake of feeling the need to be an expert on everything. When I decided to give my Instagram account a face-lift, I started a series of filmmaking tips where I pulled material from my film school notes and translated it into something the average person could understand. These posts weren’t that popular to begin with, but I felt like I had a responsibility to teach other aspiring filmmakers the tricks of the trade, even though I was just a student. My Dad and my brother suggested that instead of posting filmmaking tips, I try posting personal stories from my experience as a student filmmaker. This led to #FilmmakerJourneyTalesNot only are the posts in this new series more popular than my lessons on filmmaking, but they allowed me to get recognized by being honest, not by pretending to be an expert. I’m curious, how do you promote yourself and your credibility as an artist without trying to seem like an expert?Let me know in the comments below!⬇️ #filmmakers #filmmaking #artists #advice
